27 April 2026: Search statistics show that Ireland’s delayed spring put garden plans on hold. Chadwicks, Ireland’s leading builders’ merchant, has announced that this data indicates homeowners are now making up for lost time, with sharp rebound in outdoor projects as summer approaches.
Search interest in garden design fell by 40% year-on-year, reflecting a slower start to the season compared to 2025*. Other outdoor inspiration-led terms, such as ‘garden ideas’, are also down 30% this month, suggesting many households are delaying garden plans amid poor weather.
Despite the slower start, there are clear signs that people are still prioritising time outdoors and making use of their garden spaces overall. Searches for outdoor furniture increased by over 20% between February and March, pointing to a renewed focus on outdoor living as summer approaches.
Longer term trends remain strong, particularly for flexible spaces. Demand for garden rooms continues to grow with searches, rising by more than 40% over the past two years, highlighting the appetite for versatility.
Searches for decking surged by 66% between March and April, signalling a late but rapid start to the season. Activity is now catching up with April levels just 6% below last year’s peak after a subdued first quarter. Interest in composite decking is also rising, up nearly 20% year-on-year in March, as homeowners favour durable, low-maintenance options.
A similar pattern is evident for patios, as searches increase by 10% month-on-month, although still tracking 13% below April 2025 levels. Meanwhile, “quick win” projects are also gaining traction, with pressure washer searches jumping more than 50% from February to March, suggesting many are starting with a seasonal clean-up before taking on larger upgrades.
To support the seasonal surge, Chadwicks has announced 20% off garden furniture, as homeowners maximise time outdoors. Customers looking to make the most of the summer can pick up a Steel Frame 8-Piece Garden Furniture Dining Set with a Parasol (€239.00) or an Outdoor 6-Seater Garden Furniture Set with a Round Dining Table (€959.00) in branches nationwide.
Caitríona McGovern, Head of Category, Lightside at Chadwicks, commented on the upcoming gardening trends: “We’re seeing a clear shift towards people treating their gardens as an extension of the home. While the weather has delayed the start of the season, demand is already rebounding, particularly for decking and outdoor furniture. As conditions improve, we expect more homeowners to get started. Whether that’s a full garden upgrade or a simple refresh, our teams are on hand to help customers bring their ideas to life!”
With demand continuing to build, Chadwicks’ Outdoor Living brochure offers inspiration and practical solutions across decking, paving, decorative finishes and fencing, helping homeowners and trade professionals bring outdoor spaces to life.
