With summer season upon us there is no better time to get the lawn mower out. We know how hard it can be to get the lawn your neighbors envy. So we’ve put together our top tips on how to mow the perfect lawn.
1. Mow Safe
First things first, the most important thing to remember when mowing a lawn is safety. Although it may seem like a simple task it can be dangerous. Our top safety tips are:
- Read your mower’s manual
- Remove any objects from your lawn before mowing
- Ensure safeguards are in place on mower
- Dress properly in tight fitting clothes and shoes
- Keep children and pets out of area
- With electric mowers always ensure the wire is kept behind you and not in the mowing line.

2. Mow on dry days
Not always easy in some countries but if possible try cut your grass on dry days. Mowing when grass is wet can lead to clippings smothering the mowers blade.
3. Know when to mow
It’s best to start mowing early in the year around late February and early March. Lawns should be mowed fortnightly till May when weekly mowing should begin. Fortnightly mowing should begin again in September. Mowing can continue till November but only if ground is firm.
4. Trim grass the right height
Most mowers have adjustable height settings. When mowing in spring the blades should be set to high. Gradually throughout the year they should be lowered. Do not go too low as this may damage your lawn. Ideal grass length is between 2 cm and 5 cm.

5.Use a Grass B0x
When mowing we recommend using a grass box or bag. This will help prevent weeds spreading and makes mowing faster.

6. Get the perfect line
The best way to get a straight clean line in your lawn is to look at a spot 10ft ahead. Avoid looking down at the mower.

7. Alternate your pattern
Grass will lean in the pattern it is cut. Rotating the pattern you cut the grass leads to stronger straighter grass.
8. Clean your mower
When your mower is unplugged, powered off and cooled off clean and remove trapped grass. Always double check the mower is safely powered off.

9. Avoid newly sown grass
Mowing newly sown grass can be extremely bad for it. Wait till the grass is at least 2 cm before mowing.

If your lawn is weed free occasionally leaving your trimmings on the grass can be an excellent fertilizer.
